Kyoto Rejoicing

Yippee! The Canadian Parliament just ratified the Kyoto Protocol! The final vote was 195 for, 77 against.

Now we just need to move on implementation - a much much harder stage. Winnipeggers are invited to a public workshop on Saturday morning on what climate change impacts and Kyoto ratification are going to mean for cities.

Old Sig Files

Once upon a time, I used to be organized enough to actually change my signature file in emails. These days, I'm proud if I remember to include my name at the bottom. Anyway... I was cleaning out my old folders today and stumbled across where I used to save old sig files in case I ever forgot which quotations I had already used. Thought some of you might enjoy them...

Thru 24 Sept. 1996

"If you can't explain to the cleaning lady what you're doing, then you don't know what you're doing"
- Lord Rutherford, to his atomic fission research team at Cambridge, ca 1943

Thru 24 Oct 1996

Were all the maps of the world destroyed and vanished under the direction of some malevolent hand, each man would be blind again, each landmark become a meaningless signpost to nothing. - Beryl Markham, West with the Night

Thru 24 Nov 1996

"My thoughts," said the wanderer to his shadow, "should show me where I stand; but they should not betray to me where I am going. I love my ignorance of the future and do not wish to perish of impatience and of tasting promised things ahead of time." - Friederich Nietzsche, The Gay Science-

Thru 2 January 1997

Lessons of wisdom have never such power over us, as when they are wrought into the heart, through the ground-work of a story which engages the passions: we are like iron, and must first be heated before we can be wrought upon. - Laurence Stern, The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy, Gentleman

Thru 3 February 1997

"It doesn't do them any Good, you know, sitting on them," he went on, as he looked up munching. "Takes all the Life out of them. Remember that another time, all of you. A little Consideration, a little Thought for Others, makes all the difference." - Eeyore, Winnie-The-Pooh

Thru 4 March 1997

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
- Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Thru 14 April 1997

The seasons repeated themselves. Time gave birth again and again, and with complete contentment, produced nothing except itself."
- Antonia's Line

Thru 11 May 1997

"Last night within my chamber's gloom some vague light breath of Spring
Came wandering and whispering, and bade my soul take wing."
- Ts`en-Ts`an

Thru 22 May 1997

"The entire affair is shrouded in mystery," said D'Arnot.
"I have it on the best of authority that neither the police
nor the special agents of the general staff have the faintest
conception of how it was accomplished."
- Edgar Rice Burroughs

Thru 18 July 1997

"Never underestimate a prairie woman"
- Tom Brokaw about Grand Forks' mayor Pat Owens

Thru 15 October 1997

"Life is no brief candle to me. It is sort of a splendid torch that I
have got hold of for the moment."
- George Bernard Shaw
