Last night I was flipping channels and got hooked on Aselin Debison's CBC special. She's a 12-year old singer from Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia... a gorgeous little town that to the rest of the world looks like its situated halfway between Nowhere and The Edge of the World.

Anyway... what hooked me to the show was the concluding song "The Island" - a local anthem written by Kenzie MacNeil about life on Cape Breton. To make a long story short, I ended up bawling my eyes out in front of the TV thinking "Every kid on the planet has a right to a song like this. A song about where they are from. About the history of the place. About why its the most special place on the planet and no matter what happens, it's their home. A song where the music reflects local sounds and culture."

I'm still trying to find one for Winnipeg. But tell me... is there is special song about the city or place you are from?

Sure, they look cute and cuddly... but according to wildlife biologists, raccoons are not native to the Canadian prairies and are wreaking havoc on other local species.

Thankfully, Canadians have not yet resorted to "species profiling". When last seen, the immigrants were being oogled by kids who realized that most of their families weren't always living in Manitoba either.
