TO Student Killed in Solar Car

I was very sad to read this morning that Andrew Frow, a 21 year old student from Toronto, was killed yesterday while driving a solar powered car to a presentation at the University of Waterloo. Something seems to have gone wrong with the vehicle and it swerved across the highway into the path of an oncoming minivan.

Knowing how many TIG members there are from the Toronto area, I suspect that there are at least a few who knew Andrew personally... My thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends, particularly the other members of the Blue Sky Solar Racing Team.

One Week or Twenty Years

Sometimes it's hard to tell how much time has gone by....

I came home early this afternoon since our Web server was down at the office. While working from my home office, I flipped on the TV. Since I got rid of cable, I pretty much only get one channel. Sure enough, the soap opera "Days of Our Lives" was on. My grandmother has always watched it. My mother watched it while I was growing up. I watched it until I was 14 and went away to school.

Lo and behold... the show has not changed or advanced one bit. Every character I remember was still there, in just about the same predicament as when I last saw the show. Talk about convenience! I can watch once every twenty years and not miss a beat :)

A thank you letter

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for not killing Linda and I last night on Fermor. I wish I knew your name, so I could thank you more personally... but there really wasn't time before the paramedics and firefighters told us to clear out. But, I wanted to make sure that you knew that we did appreciate your split-second decision to veer off into the construction lane rather than plow through the back of our car when you noticed we had stopped at the red light. I couldn't believe how much damage was done by the 1 foot concrete trench in that other lane... but I am glad that the airbags and seatbelts saved your lives. The front end of your car and windshield looked pretty bad.

I totally understand how these things happen. With all of the construction barricades and traffic, I didn't didn't see the red light 100 m in front of us either. It surprised me when the car in front of me put on his brakes too. Fortunately, for whatever reason, I had been having a conversation about fatal car accidents earlier in the day and was keeping a close eye on traffic. And since I knew I was tired after getting up at 4:30 AM to drive to Kenora in the fog for a rowing competition, and then back again, I was being extra cautious. But, these things do happen. Linda said that when you talked to her, you said you had only turned to make a comment to your wife in the passenger's seat for a moment. Cars are odd; somehow it only takes a moment - the wrong moment- for accidents to happen.

In any case, I hope your broken arm and both you and your wife's necks are feeling better today. Although, I suspect that now that the shock has worn off, they probably hurt worse.

Take care and please relax today on the holiday.

Thanks again for not killing us. That would have really ruined a wonderful day.

- Terri
